In November 2020, amid the uncertainties of a global pandemic, St. Vincent Wine opened its doors in the heart of Washington, D.C.'s Parkview neighborhood. Conceived as a welcoming retreat for both locals and visitors, this unique establishment invites everyone to relax and immerse themselves in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The visionaries behind this haven, including Frederick Uku, envisioned a place where anyone could feel at home, whether enjoying a bottle of wine in the garden or savoring crafted cocktails to the sounds of local jazz music upstairs.
Frederick, one of St. Vincent's founders, recalls the immense challenges faced during the restaurant's inception. Originally slated to open in March 2020, the plans were upended by COVID-19 pandemic, forcing them to adapt to the new normal. "It’s very difficult to plan in the middle of the unknown," Frederick reflected. The initial delay was just the beginning of a series of setbacks, including the loss of a major investor, which stripped away over $300,000 in anticipated funding.
Despite these hurdles, Frederick and his team persevered. "We went from being almost fully funded to being almost fully unfunded," he said. In this critical moment, the Latino Economic Development Center (LEDC) became a lifeline. Introduced to LEDC’s 0% interest $75k CED loans, Frederick connected with Emi Reyes—the current CEO of LEDC, whose support was instrumental in securing the necessary funding to move forward. "There's a reason why every time Emi visits us, I tell whoever is next to me that if it wasn’t for her, we would not be here right now," Frederick emphasized. The loan from LEDC provided a crucial financial cushion, enabling St. Vincent Wine to attract new investors and ultimately realize their vision.
Located just six blocks from Howard University, where Frederick studied electrical engineering, St. Vincent Wine holds a special significance to him. "This is a full circle moment," he shared. "There is no other place I would rather be; it has a lot of meaning and a deep personal connection." Frederick’s journey from a student in the neighborhood to a seasoned industry professional with over 25 years of experience, now running his own business in the same area, speaks to his deep-rooted commitment to the community.
"My strength is working with people," he noted. Frederick’s transition from studying electrical engineering to embracing the dynamic world of being a food business owner, underscores his desire to engage directly with individuals and create meaningful experiences. This ethos is deep into the fabric of St. Vincent Wine, where live music and a selection of around 270 wine labels enhance the vibrant atmosphere.
