Small Business Coach/Liaison - Baltimore

LEDC Synopsis: The Latino Economic Development Center (LEDC) is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) community development corporation founded in 1991. LEDC's mission is to drive the economic and social advancement of low to moderate income Latinos and other underserved communities by equipping them with the skills and tools to achieve financial independence and become leaders in their communities. LEDC's main office is in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC, and has branch offices in Wheaton, MD; Baltimore, MD; Arlington, VA; and Mayagüez, Puerto Rico.

Position Summary: LEDC is seeking a Small Business Coach/Liaison to support its Small Business Development Maryland team in their work providing business support services to aspiring entrepreneurs and existing small businesses in Baltimore City and Baltimore County. This job description is not intended to be all inclusive. The Small Business Coach/Liaison will be expected to complete additional tasks as assigned.

Essential Job Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Conduct outreach in targeted business corridors
  • Assist small business clients in determining and supporting their technical assistance needs
  • Capture client information through intake forms, maintain accurate client records through data entry and work with Program Manager to track progress on goals
  • Provide one on one technical assistance to aspiring and existing small businesses to help improve their core business skills
  • Help clients navigate the licensing/registration process to start and expand their businesses
  • Underwrite credit building loan applications and provide one-on-one financial literacy to clients
  • Plan and develop group trainings that provide small business owners with the tools and skills needed to be successful
  • Recruit and manage expert consultants that can provide in-depth assistance to small business owners
  • Conduct ongoing research about business tools and resources, news that might affect the MD entrepreneurial ecosystem, business licensing, and small business development opportunities
  • Connect clients with other LEDC services and available resources from LEDC partners
  • Generate and manage external consultant engagements
  • Promote LEDC services in different platforms, forums, and events as needed
  • Collaborate with Program Manager in the programmatic planning and execution of SBD programs

Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one advice to aspiring and existing small business owners to help improve their core business skills.
  • Identify key problems that clients are unaware their business is facing.
  • Underwrite credit-building loan applications and provide one-on-one financial literacy to clients.
  • Help clients navigate the licensing/registration process to start, expand, close, or sell a business.
  • Plan and develop group training sessions that provide small business owners with the tools and skills needed to be successful.
  • Conduct community outreach to build a strong network of partners and service providers to offer comprehensive assistance to LEDC’s clients.
  • Recruit and manage expert consultants, contractors, or volunteers who can provide in-depth technical assistance or required services to small business owners.
  • Capture client data through intake forms, maintain accurate client records, and collaborate with the Program Manager to meet program goals and benchmarks.
  • Prepare and submit monthly and quarterly reports for internal and external use.
  • Conduct ongoing research about business tools and resources, news that might affect the DC entrepreneurial ecosystem, business licensing, and small business development opportunities.
  • Connect clients with other LEDC services and available resources in the DMV.
  • Promote LEDC services in different platforms, forums, and events as needed.
  • Collaborate with Program Manager in the programmatic planning and execution of SBD programs 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in business management or finance
  • Bilingual (written and verbal) in English and Spanish
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal
  • Available to work occasional nights and weekends as needed
  • Excellent organizational skills with high attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to people from a broad range of socio-economic backgrounds, formal education levels, cultures, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience running a small business
  • Experience providing small business technical assistance and/or training
  • Certified financial counselor
  • Knowledge of basic business accounting
  • Understanding of small business development as a tool for community-based economic development
  • Ability to handle a heavy caseload, in an optimistic manner

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary range is $48K - $55K, depending on experience, qualifications, and salary history.
  • Benefits are competitive within the DMV area and include a healthcare plan, 10 observed holidays, and 4 weeks of vacation per year.
