One City, One LicenseContinuing the District's steadfast support for the immigrant community, the DC Council has voted unanimously to allow undocumented DC residents to obtain unmarked standard drivers licenses. As a member of the DC Immigrant Rights Coalition working with immigrant families in support of the legislation, LEDC applauds the decision.

The Council voted to amend legislation introduced by DC Mayor Vincent Gray that would have marked driver’s licenses for undocumented residents as not valid for federal purposes. Council members David Catania, Jim Graham, and David Grosso voiced significant opposition to an amendment offered by Councilmember Vincent Orange to reintroduce the Mayor's original language.

"I have seen a lot of suffering in my community and it's time to have equal rights and respect for everyone," said Paula Vasquez, a Mexican immigrant with three children. "I will benefit by being able to open a bank account and drive a car with rights, and the police won't be able to stop me."

A final vote on the measure will take place in September.
